GWGuardian Keeps the Department of Psychology at University of Copenhagen SPAM-Free!
The Institute for Psychology is a part of the University of Copenhagen. With 35000 students and 7000 employees, this is Denmark’s biggest university. The Institute for Psychology has 1600 students and offers research-based education in the area of psychology. The messaging infrastructure at the Institute is spread over 5 different locations with 1 central GroupWise server.
Ole Bested, IT-engineer at the Institute for Psykol, explains the problems which the Institute for Psychology had to deal with. “Students at a University are very diverse and subscribe to different kinds of lists and hence receive a lot of different messages. There was a lot of spam getting through to end-user mailboxes. That’s why we were looking for a spam filtering solution that would allow us to see the messages that we liked to see. All the spam that came in went to a separate folder and our administrators needed to go through it email by email. This cost them a lot of time and in addition, it affected GroupWise performance, so overall the spam problem had a very negative effect.”
“There came a certain point when the IT department and the management made the decision that the situation couldn’t go on like this any longer,” Ole Bested continues. The Institute got in touch with ITQuality, one of Messaging Architects’ partners, who recommended the special Academic Edition of GWGuardian.

The GWGuardian implementation was done by the technical engineers of ITQuality, and the institution-wide deployment took less than 48 hours. Following the successful installation of GWGuardian Academic, the Institute for Psychology saw the immediate effect of GWGuardian. Ole Bested explains, “All the problems we had experienced before simply disappeared. GWGuardian is user driven and may be configured to grant end users full access and maximum control. As a gateway solution deployed in front of the email system, it doesn’t affect the GroupWise system and we don’t have a loss in server performance any more. Another advantage is that users can add to their blacklists and whitelists themselves. The combination of two independent anti-virus systems, one that’s SMPT-based for email and one that’s on the workstation, is perfect for us. The GWGuardian anti-spam engine is also very good, especially compared to the previous product we were using, which required constant tweaking and ‘training’. GWGuardian does that itself. We also make use of the SMTP security features, which makes managing the influx of spam much easier.”
"At this point, we’re planning to upgrade our GWGuardian to version 4.2, because we’re extremely happy with this product overall," concludes Bested.
