GWGuardian Adds Value and Functionality to the Messaging Infrastructure at Le Moyne College

Le Moyne College, located in Syracuse, NY, is an independent college established in 1946 and over the years has evolved into a nationally acclaimed college of liberal arts and sciences that draws students from across the U.S. and abroad. The school’s IT department relies on Novell applications to ensure a secure and reliable messaging infrastructure, using GroupWise and NetMail for collaboration between faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

For a year now, a total of 7500 emails users at Le Moyne College have been protected from spam, viruses and other internet-borne threats by GWGuardian. Before GWGuardian, the academic organization was using another product which didn’t meet their needs with respect to catching spam successfully and it also lacked the flexibility to allow end users to manage and deal with trapped spam messages. While searching for an archiving solution, the IT staff at Le Moyne College were made aware of the fact that GWGuardian is used internally by Novell, further evidence as to the solution’s scalability and superior qualities.

"The fact that Novell was using GWGuardian lent it credibility and certainly confirmed the fact that it was worth taking a good look," says Shaun Black, Director of Network Services. "GWGuardian provided exactly the functionality we were looking for: it allowed spam management to be transferred to end users without compromising the email system security. Moreover, the additional AV engine that was scanning email before the desktop-level AV scanning we had already implemented provided an additional degree of security. Security is particularly relevant in the context of educational organizations where there are different kinds of users who receive wide-ranging kinds of email.

"To sum up, the two primary benefits that we get from GWGuardian are its superior effectiveness in eliminating spam from our system and the possibility for self-management it allows our end users,” continues Black. “From an administrator’s perspective, it’s a phenomenal product that requires very little support and does what it’s supposed to do. The end users have also come to like and appreciate the protection it offers them. They noticed the difference with GWGuardian immediately after we deployed it."

End users have access to both the daily quarantine reports and the web-based portal that allows them to view their spam quarantine in real time. This gives them maximum flexibility and ease to manage their email messages.

"In order to reconcile email security with the need to provide free access to information, which, in the context of an academic institution, is a very broad concept, before GWGuardian we used to tag spam messages and then users had to ‘folderize’ them manually or applying rules. In either case, this process used to take up a lot of their time. With the GWGuardian daily quarantine reports, the process has been considerably streamlined and hence the end users’ productivity has increased. Without a doubt, GWGuardian is the best product available on the market, we are very happy with it and I would recommend it to anyone. The critical factor for us is that we don’t have to manage it," explains Black.
