With the amount of data companies are using today, the risk of storage bloat is an ever growing concern for companies throughout the IT industry. The need for storage efficiency has made many companies focus on data deduplication as a priority.
Duplication rates, according to a source obtained by Channel Insider, are at 30 percent or more for companies that aren't properly prepared.
Many companies are intent on getting rid of duplicate data for reasons other than simply gaining extra storage space or cutting down on maintenance costs. Lessening data storage needs can also "reduce backup windows, cut communication costs and improve such critical areas as replication, remote backups and disaster recovery," according to the magazine.
"Business continuity is the main driver behind this market," said David Hill, principal at Mesabi Group, in an interview with Channel Insider. "If there is ever a problem, you have to be able to restore the data. Ever since Sarbanes-Oxley and the threat of legal repercussions, risk avoidance has been critical, and it's not just for big companies"
A recent study done by IDC and first reported by TG Daily found that the volume of digital data globally increased by 62 percent, or nearly 800,000 petabytes, from 2008 to 2009.
