Gartner: Email is top archiving priority

Companies place the greatest emphasis on storing and retaining email when it comes to information storage solutions, according to a recent report from market research firm Gartner.

According to a pair of Gartner analysts, the recent explosion of email has forced companies to prioritize email archiving solutions. The emphasis is also based on the notion that email, because it is so popular, demands the most attention for storage considerations.

"While records management can help address the retention of static content, it is challenged in managing the volume of content that email and other office productivity tools generate," report authors Sheila Childs and Kenneth Chin of Gartner wrote.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving also concluded that companies are putting more of an emphasis on eDiscovery functionality when selecting an email archiving solution. An increase in litigation means most companies are in need of at least basic eDiscovery support features.

The recent case of EchoStar Satellites demonstrates the importance of selecting a proper email retention solution. The company was fined for the second time for improperly destroying emails related to a pending lawsuit.
