Email archiving
South Carolina Republican Gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley recently released the email archive from her tenure as the state's House of Representatives to squash rumors of an alleged extra-marital affair. Haley believes the archive will demonstrate her innocence and help alleviate any concerns voters have regarding her personal ethics.
Various media outlets in the state submitted requests for her archive, which she prepared and released to evade any talk of a cover-up. The allegations stem from a claim by blogger Will Folks that he and Haley had "an inappropriate physical relationship." Despite the claims, Haley won the Republican primary and is considered a front runner in November's election.
"We turned around, we gave those emails. We did it in as quick of a time as we could but, in all honesty, to go through 10,000 sheets of paper and protect and take out email addresses and names so that we weren't putting anybody in privacy rights issues, it takes a long time," Haley said.
Despite the release of the archive, however, some pundits believe there are still more emails Haley has not released. Furthermore, some believe the messages may not be accurate, since she made them available more than a month after the initial request.
While email archiving is used mostly to ensure compliance with various state and federal regulations, Haley's case illustrates another invaluable aspect of having sound email archiving policy.
