Companies and other agencies in Christchurch, New Zealand have been forced to deal with data loss as a result of the massive earthquake that struck the region last week. The earthquake, which was measured at higher than a 7 on the Richter scale caused damage to countless buildings, but the resulting data loss may also put some of them out of business permanently.
Oftentimes, smaller organizations fail to implement disaster recovery solutions or data backup due to expense. Turning to an email archiving solution is one way for companies to ensure their data is safe in the event of a major natural disaster or other issue.
"Many of these businesses have not actually lost data, but they cannot access their buildings to get to their computers due to safety reasons. Many businesses will be able to operate from another location if they are simply able to access their important computer data," Chris Sefton, a data security expert, said.
Despite the issues, some economists believe the disaster will help the region's economy in the future, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Citing similar circumstances in the United States and Japan, the recovery effort is expected to boost the region's economy by 1.5 percent in the future.
