The Challenge: Ensuring Uninterrupted Email Service
Scotcall uses Novell GroupWise as a messaging platform and like most businesses email is a critical application for them. According to IT Infrastructure Engineer Colin Shand, email is important because it is it the primary means through which Scotcall’s clients communicate with them. The email system needs to be available with minimum downtime and without any risks.
"Without email, we have got a lot of problems," said Shand.
Given the numerous responsibilities of the IT staff, they always appreciate solutions that simplify their work. That is why a few years ago, they selected and deployed M+Guardian as their email security gateway.
"The reason we chose M+Guardian was because a few of our executives were complaining of high levels of spam in their mailboxes and were unhappy with the situation," explains Shand. "To be honest, since we deployed M+Guardian, the complaints have disappeared. I don’t see any spam coming through any more – and, what’s great for us, the product works with minimal interaction from an IT perspective."
The fact that M+Guardian requires very little maintenance and daily administration is a great benefit for the IT department. Users receive their daily quarantine reports with trapped messages and manage that part themselves. Scotcall also uses the M+Guardian policy engine to automatically monitor email based on content. "If something that was trapped because of the policy needs to be allowed, we will let it through very quickly, but the monitoring is done via M+Guardian," says Shand.
