Spamhaus Project Teams Up with Messaging Architects to Continue Fight against Spam and Email Fraud
Canadian Mirror will enable free, fast and secure SBL/XBL lookup service, blocking spam from entering corporate networks across and the world
Montreal, CANADA, February 10, 2005 – Messaging Architects, a leader in Policy, Security & Mobility Solutions for Enterprise Email, announced today that it is teaming up with Spamhaus to sponsor the first official Canadian mirror site for the Spamhaus Block List (SBL) which is a database of IP addresses of direct spam sources; spammers, spam gangs and spam support services that may be queried by mail systems throughout the Internet for the purpose of refusing mail from known spam senders. The SBL is broadcast from a network of servers in 12 countries (now 13 with the Canadian Mirror), and is used by many of the Internet's major Internet Service Providers, Corporations, Universities, Government and Military networks. It is currently used to protect over 500 million Internet mailboxes.
Spamhaus also publishes the Register Of Known Spam Operations (ROKSO) - a database collating information and evidence on the 200 worst spam gangs worldwide, used by ISPs to avoid signing up known spammers, and by Law Enforcement Agencies to help prosecute spam gangs. All SBL entries are backed up with evidence which has fully satisfied the Spamhaus Project team that the IP is under the control of a spammer, spam operation or a spam support service and that the IP or netblock represents an unwanted nuisance or threat to mail systems using the SBL.
"With current spam levels at over 75% of all email, and the United Nations estimating the current cost of dealing with the problem at 25 billion dollars a year, illegal proxy spammers have now once again upped the ante releasing improved versions of their stealth proxy spamming software with new features to increase spam volumes still further," indicated Steve Linford, the CEO of Spamhaus, which is located in London, UK. "At the current pace, if left unchecked, spam could reach 95% of all email traffic by mid-2006 – by working with our sponsors, such as Messaging Architects, we hope to prevent this."
The Spamhaus project depends on sponsors’ mirror sites, such as the one provided by Messaging Architects, to ensure redundancy for the service and prevent spammers from shutting it down with a denial of service attacks as attempted numerous times in the past. By housing an official Canadian mirror site for the Spamhaus project, Messaging Architects consistently continues to play its part as a leader in the fight against spam and other blended threats. The Messaging Architects’ dedication to email security is further reflected in its commitment to provide technical expertise to the Spamhaus spambusters and by adding direct support for the SBL and XBL lists in its GWGuardian/MXGuardian Email Security Applications.
"Spamhaus depends on donations to be able to continue to provide the free SBL/XBL services. As a major player in the worldwide fight against spam, we are pleased to be able to provide resources that will enhance the reach, speed and security of the Spamhaus services," said Pierre Chamberland, the CEO of Messaging Architects. "By also adding native support for SBL and XBL directly into our GWGuardian and MXGuardian Secure Email applications, we are also enhancing the performance and value that our applications deliver to clients worldwide."
